Choosing pipe and fittings

Most domestic hot and cold work still runs in 15mm and 22mm copper, jointed with end feed, solder ring or compression fittings. Copper suits exposed pipework and high-temperature circuits, and end feed gives the neatest finish where joints will be seen. Push-fit is faster where access is tight or where the system has to be drained and remade — barrier pipe is essential on heating circuits because it prevents oxygen ingress and the sludge that follows. Plastic waste runs in 32mm, 40mm and 50mm solvent weld or push-fit, with 110mm soil above and below ground. Check the fitting standard matches the pipe: push-fit and compression sizes are not always interchangeable between manufacturers.

Valves, isolation and controls

Fit isolation where it saves a future call-out: service valves on every tap and appliance connection, lever ball valves on flow and return, and drain cocks at the low points. Check valves and double check valves protect against backflow where a hose or filling loop is connected. On heating systems an inline magnetic filter and a proper dose of inhibitor do more for longevity than any single component — they capture magnetite before it reaches the pump or heat exchanger.

Ordering for site and stock

Trade accounts see their pricing on every product page, so estimating a materials list does not need a phone call. Standard UK mainland delivery is charged at a flat rate and is free over the threshold shown at checkout; heavy, long-length or palletised items are quoted separately. For a full plumbing schedule on a refurbishment or development, send the drawings or a takeoff through the project quote form and we will price the whole lot in one go.

Plumbing Supplies — frequently asked questions

What plumbing supplies can I order from Plumb Supply?

Copper tube and fittings, push-fit and plastic pipework, compression fittings, valves, soil and waste, traps, taps, cylinders, expansion vessels, water treatment and everyday plumbing consumables.

Do you sell to trade customers?

Yes. Apply for a trade account and your pricing shows on every product page, along with order history, VAT invoices and project quotations.

Can I order plumbing materials for delivery to site?

Yes — we deliver across UK mainland to a home, office or site address. Heavy, oversized or palletised items are quoted at checkout.

Should I use copper or push-fit pipe?

Copper is the usual choice for exposed pipework and higher temperatures; push-fit is quicker in tight or awkward spaces. Barrier pipe should always be used on heating circuits.

What's the difference between a gate valve and a ball valve?

A gate valve closes with a sliding gate and can seize or fail to shut off fully over time, while a ball valve uses a rotating bored ball that gives a more reliable, low-maintenance shut-off and a clear open/closed indication.

What size pipe feeds a standard radiator?

Most domestic radiators are fed with 15mm pipe, with the pipework often stepping up to 22mm or 28mm nearer the boiler on larger systems.

Is plastic pipe as good as copper for central heating?

Oxygen barrier plastic pipe is widely used on heating circuits, particularly underfloor heating, and performs well. Copper remains standard for boiler primary connections and anywhere near a significant heat source.

Are push-fit fittings as reliable as compression fittings?

Both are reliable when fitted correctly. Push-fit relies on a clean, square, deburred pipe end and the correct insert; compression relies on the correct tightening torque and a sound olive. Neither should be buried without an access point.
