Underground drainage

Domestic foul drainage is generally 110mm, with 160mm used where flow or run length requires it. Keep falls within the recommended range — too shallow and solids settle, too steep and liquid runs away from them. Use long-radius bends at the base of stacks and at changes of direction, and provide rodding access at junctions and at every change the rods cannot reach around. Inspection chambers and risers should be set to finished level with a cover rated for the traffic that will cross it.

Above-ground soil and waste

Waste pipe runs in 32mm for basins, 40mm for sinks, baths and showers, and 50mm where runs are long. Every appliance needs a trap with the correct seal depth, and long unvented branches will siphon unless an air admittance valve or a proper vent is provided. Solvent weld joints are the most secure on concealed runs; push-fit is easier where a section may need dismantling later.

Rainwater and surface water

Half round is the usual domestic gutter profile, with deepflow used where roof area or rainfall intensity demands more capacity. Support brackets at the recommended spacing and maintain fall towards the outlet, or the gutter will sag and pond. Channel drains and yard gullies handle surface water across driveways and patios; choose the load class for the traffic and keep gratings removable for cleaning. Rainwater diverters make water butt connections tidy where a customer wants them.

Drainage Supplies — frequently asked questions

What drainage products can I order?

Underground pipe, couplers, bends and junctions, inspection chambers, soil and waste pipe and fittings, gutters, downpipes, hoppers, gullies, channel drains and manhole covers.

What size is domestic underground drainage?

Most domestic foul drainage uses 110mm pipe, with 160mm where flow rate or run length requires greater capacity.

Do you deliver drainage materials to site?

Yes. Drainage materials are delivered across UK mainland; long lengths and palletised loads are quoted separately at checkout.

Can I connect a bath waste into a 32mm pipe?

No. A bath discharges far more quickly than a basin and needs 40mm as a minimum, with a shallow trap where depth under the bath is limited.

Why does my bathroom smell after fitting a new shower?

Usually a lost trap seal caused by siphonage or evaporation. Check the branch size, the trap depth and whether the stack is properly ventilated near the new connection.

Is an air admittance valve as good as a vented stack?

It resolves negative pressure and is widely used where an external terminal is impractical, but it does not relieve positive pressure. At least one stack on a system normally remains open to the outside air.
