Boilers: combi, system or regular
A combi suits most one-bathroom properties: no cylinder, no cold tank, hot water on demand. Where two bathrooms are used at once, or the incoming main is weak, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder gives far better simultaneous performance. Regular (heat-only) boilers remain the straight swap on older vented systems where the customer wants to keep the tanks in the loft. Off the gas grid, oil and LPG models cover the same three configurations. Size on heat loss rather than on the boiler that came out — oversizing costs efficiency and shortens cycling life.
Radiators and valves
Type 11, 21 and 22 panel radiators cover most output requirements; column and designer models are chosen where the radiator is part of the room. Towel rails should be sized honestly — a bathroom rarely heats on a rail alone. Pair every radiator except the one in the thermostat's room with a TRV, and use lockshields to balance flow so the last radiator on the circuit heats as well as the first. Electric radiators and electric towel rails suit extensions and conversions where extending the wet circuit is not practical.
Controls, cylinders and commissioning
Building regulations expect proper time and temperature control, so programmers, room thermostats, smart thermostats and zone valves are part of the job, not an upsell. Unvented cylinders need the right expansion vessel and discharge arrangement, and installation is restricted to qualified operatives. Before handover, flush the system, fit a magnetic filter and dose it with inhibitor — the cheapest insurance against pump and heat exchanger failures. Flue runs, plume kits and extensions should be specified from the manufacturer's own range so the warranty stands.
